Robert Orr & Associates LLC
839 Chapel Street
New Haven, CT 06510
Robert Orr founded his namesake architectural firm in 1982. Operating out of a former button factory on Chapel Street in New Haven, the firm boasts a distinguished portfolio of residential, commercial and institutional projects that span a range of geographic locales including the Florida Panhandle, the slopes of Aspen, Colorado, the New Jersey hunt country, and the upscale suburbs of Connecticut.
Although there is probably not a signature design statement for Robert Orr & Associates' work, the firm is mostly associated with "modern traditional" architecture. Mr. Orr, who is the design force in his organization, looks to classic historic traditions for his inspiration: Palladian villas, Georgian estates, 18th century American colonial structures, early 20th century Shingle Style houses and 1940s Modern to name a few. At the same time, the work is designed in a style that is distinctly appropriate to its site. As Mr. Orr states, "Each project makes direct associations with its unique community and therefore differs from others. We are driven by the goal to achieve aesthetic and provocative interest within a local language."
The firm enjoys a reputation for meticulous architectural detailing and its ability to seek out and work with the finest building craftsmen in America.
Following graduation from Yale Architectural School, Mr. Orr worked with the office of Philip Johnson and subsequently, with the well-known traditionalist Allan Greenberg before starting his own practice.
Robert Orr & Associates receives numerous awards and recognitions for its work. Particularly noteworthy in this regard is the Florida community of Seaside, which has been described by Time Magazine as "…the most astonishment achievement of its era and one might hope the most influential."
